Shelter Children Rehabilitation Centre is a non-religious and non-profit making
home for orphaned, destitute, abused
and abandoned children in Kenya. We are located 30 km away from Nairobi
in a rural Maasailand setting near Ngong town. Currently, more than 130
children are
provided for, ranging from infancy to 21 years of age. There
is an equal number of boys and girls, and approximately 75% are orphans and 25%
destitute children in need of care and special protection.
The centre pays school fees for children attending primary, secondary and vocational
schools, some of which are
boarding schools. For the pre-schoolers, we run
a kindergarten within the centre.

Rehabilitation: How we do it
 |
-
Our centre is gender-sensitive for both girls and boys. We have an individualized
approach on how we carry out our activities as it pertains to them.
- We protect the children; we use no corporal punishment, no child labour and no physical,
sexual or mental harassment.
- We provide medical/clinical care.
- We ensure that the children are learning in an active and participatory manner.
- We consistently seek the involvement of all the children, their families and the
community as it is critical in such an institution.
- We train our children on life skills and HIV/AIDS.
- We develop children's self-esteem and self-confidence through value orientation.
Most of the children are in the formative stages of life.
- Our children are also given access to entertainment and recreation opportunities
and facilities.
