Shelter Children Rehabilitation Centre is always in need of funding. We rely
heavily on private donations to make ends meet. To make a donation towards
a project or to sponsor a child, please contact us.
Fund-raising Activities
A number of activities and programs are conducted every year to raise funds for the centre. These include a charity walk, dinner, Happy Sunday, shoe-shine/car
wash, Donate-a-meal, sale of stickers/tins and direct appeal.
Child Sponsorship
Sponsoring a child at Shelter costs US$530 a year (US$45 a month). Funds are
allocated as follows :
- Food and Accommodation - $179.
- Medical - $109.
- Education - $88. Includes tuition fees as well as other costs like books and
uniforms. This figure is the average across all children.
- Maintenance - $154. General upkeep costs such as clothing, utility bills,
etc.
Current Projects
Agriculture
We plan to expand our agricultural self-sustenance projects :
- Purchase three dairy cattle to provide milk for the children and ensure provision
of manure for farming. Estimated cost is US$1,571 (Ksh.110,000).
- Provision of horticultural inputs for the farm irrigation system at a cost of US$1,925 (Ksh.134,800).
Boys' Dormitory
We plan to convert the outdoor hall structure into a boys' dormitory which will
house 70 boys. We expect construction to begin in early 2007 and take six
months to complete. The estimated cost is US$25,000 (Ksh.1.8 million).
Guesthouse
One of our core income-generating projects, the forest view guesthouse, is almost
complete. For it to be fully functional, we require some resources (furnishing
package) as follows :

Internet Access
There are no fixed telephone lines running to the centre's location. We plan to set up an Internet access facility for both office and children use, at the approximate
cost of US$1,214 (Ksh.85,000).
Challenges
School Fees
Secondary school fees are not met for some students because not all children are
sponsored. For each student, secondary school costs run to Ksh.43,500 per
year. In 2007, we have 39 students attending secondary school, giving a total
cost of US$24,236 (Ksh.1,696,500). Education is one
of our highest priorities.
Administrative Costs
We have a team that works for the children in the centre. Monthly administrative
costs, which include staff salaries, utility bills, postage/telephone costs, transport
costs and office supplies, run to US$2,786 (Ksh.195,000) a month. Meeting the
staff salary allowance of US$2,171 (Ksh.152,000) per month is a big challenge. We currently have
3 months of unpaid salaries totalling US$6,514 (Ksh.456,000).
